The saddle bag, tent bag or khorjeen is a double bag which can be either made with the cushion or kilm techniques, performs the same function as does a basket in other countries. A large version was used as panniers on donkey and horses, and are still in use nowadays but on motorbikes or bicycles. In the yurt or traditional Mongolian style tent, saddle bags were used as cushion, as there was no furniture, or to store grain, clothes or other possessions. The big tent bag is called juwal or choval.
The warm and rust coloured pompoms are typical of both piled (carpet) and flat –woven (kilim) saddle bags. These saddle bags were made in the mid 1960s by Afghan nomad Baluch who lived in the western frontier area of the country, around the south of Herat city.
Jallar is a traditional Turkmen wall hanging used on the yurt or tent walls. We have very fine semi-antique jallars; the back side is entirely made of kilim.
Baluch bolesht were used as cushions in tents. The horsehair loops at the top end are for fastening. All the pieces have flat woven backs. Most of the pieces are about 30 years old. This is a selection of unique pieces. Shipping is not included but can be arranged by courier or cargo according to the customer’s choice. |
